You're probably wondering where this started.

It started in 1998. With a film called Belly. And a boy watching it who had no idea his life was about to mirror everything on the screen.

The screen opens on Queens. Not the Queens of postcards or promises — the Queens of project hallways and corner codes, where the rules are unwritten but everyone knows them, where boys become men before anyone asks if they are ready, where the jungle does not announce itself. It simply is. All around you. Always.

A park bench. A man. A boy.

Twelve years old. Already out here. Already carrying what no child should carry — not because he chose it, but because the choice was made for him long before he was old enough to understand what was being decided. The father figures were gone. The stability was engineered out of reach. And into that vacuum — as it always does — the street moved in. This is not a story unique to one boy. It is the architecture of a system. Built quietly, deliberately, with great institutional patience — to receive Black boys at one end and return them broken at the other. The school to prison pipeline is not a metaphor. It is infrastructure. Designed as carefully as any bridge. Just built to go somewhere else.

Nas looks at the boy. Not through him. Not past him. At him. The way someone looks at you when they see the crown before you do. And from the world of One Love — the verse, the letter, the testimony — those words find their way to the screen:

Five words containing a library. A mentor. A safe room. A future. Five words that were, in that moment, the only infrastructure this boy had. The only elder. The only system that showed up and said: I see you. You are worth more than this.

The credits rolled. The lights came up. And the boy went back to the jungle.

Because the room didn't exist.

I was young when I first watched Belly. My father was the kind of man who brought the world to you early — rap music, concerts, car shows, the energy of Black men moving through life with style and intention. He put that film in front of me the way he put everything in front of me: because he believed in exposure. Because he understood that what a boy sees becomes what a boy believes is possible.

He went to jail when I was eight. Twenty years.

And just like that — the man who had been my window to the world was gone.

I was standing at the same threshold every boy in that film stands at. The same vacuum. The same jungle waiting to fill the space a father leaves behind. I watched other boys get swallowed by it. I felt the pull myself. By the grace of God — and by something in me that held, even when it had every reason not to — I did not end up in the same fate.

But I never forgot what it felt like to stand at that edge. I never forgot what the absence of a room can do to a boy who needed one.

That memory is the core of why R.I.S.E exists.

The child actor who played Shorty in that film recently told his story publicly. At twelve, he was already in the streets. The role didn't save him — the hood fame made things worse. He was locked up at thirteen. He spent the next twenty years behind bars. When he got out, prison felt more stable than freedom. He became homeless. Jobless. And he is now pleading for the chance to tell his story to children — so they don't repeat his mistakes.

He is still looking for the room that should have existed when Nas spoke those words to him. He is still looking for someone to give him the microphone and the platform to be the elder he needed and never had.

That room is being built now.

The Announcement

WHAT IS BEING BUILT

This is not a campaign. This is not a concept. This is not a vision board assembled in a conference room by people who have never lived what they are trying to solve.

What is being announced here is the founding of a permanent institution. Built from the inside out. Born not from strategy but from a life pressed all the way to its edges and rebuilt — deliberately, spiritually, without apology. R.I.S.E — Reclaiming Identity, Sovereignty & Elevation — is a Pan-African liberation nonprofit whose flagship center will be established in Accra, Ghana. It is the living extension of everything BY DESIGN documents. The book is the testimony. RISE is the return.

A percentage of every copy of BY DESIGN sold goes directly toward making this real.

To call RISE a community center would be to undersell it.

What is being built in Accra is a temple of possibility — a permanent space where African youth are not helped, but restored. Not given charity, but returned what was withheld. Not managed, but seen. Not contained, but unleashed.

The library is inspired by Timbuktu — the reminder that Africa was the world's knowledge center long before the world acknowledged it. The creative rooms are built for gifts the world has not yet recognized: music, art, poetry, writing — not talent development for commercial export, but identity development for personal sovereignty. Joy is not optional here. It is medicine. The AI center and Web3 simulation lab place children from Accra and Lagos and Nairobi at the frontier of emerging technology — not as consumers, but as builders. Not catching up. Leading. The wellness rooms hold sound healing, breathwork, African spirituality, and meditation — because the trauma carried in Black and African bodies is real, ancient, and layered, and healing it is not secondary to the mission. It is the mission. The startup accelerator and business development hub complete the circle: identity leads to capability, capability leads to enterprise, enterprise leads to ownership, ownership leads to legacy.

Every room tells the same story: you are not here to survive. You are here to reign.

How It Sustains Itself

THE THREE ENGINES

RISE does not operate as a single center dependent on the goodwill of donors. It is built as a self-sustaining ecosystem powered by three interconnected engines — because an institution built on charity is an institution that can be starved.

The first engine is the community center itself — the physical space, the programs, the daily irreversible work of restoration.

The second engine is a financial sovereignty infrastructure. Through GNE — Global Network Enterprises — RISE gives African individuals and businesses access to the financial systems they have been deliberately, systematically excluded from. ITIN access pathways. US credit profile building. LLC structuring. Asset protection and trust frameworks. All without requiring US citizenship. This is not financial literacy as a class. This is financial sovereignty as a practice. Every person touched becomes a node in a network of sovereign African wealth — not wealth extracted for personal gain, but wealth circulated in community. The flagship center in Ghana is the first. Nigeria. Cameroon. Kenya. Each inheriting the full architecture. Each staffed by people from the communities it serves. Each generating its own cultural currency and contributing to the shared network.

Partners include YouthsAndTheFuture — led by Princess Abumbi Prudence in Cameroon — a force for young people whose work demonstrates what happens when Africans lead African solutions.

We are aiming to curate strategic cultural partnerships with institutions such as the Nubuke Foundation, Terra Kulture, the Open Book Festival, Storymoja, and Melon Mission Kenya — whose roots in East African community development align deeply with the work being built here.

RISE is not separate from African cultural life. It is woven into it.

Africa is not catching up to the world. The world is finally catching up to Africa. The continent holds more youth than any other on earth. Where there is youth, there is the future. History did not begin in Europe. It began in Africa. And it will begin again there — not because we demand it, but because it was always so. The interruption is ending. The original story is resuming.

BY DESIGN is one form of that return. RISE is the other.

Every child who enters our doors is Shorty in that moment — full of potential that the world has not yet recognized, surrounded by madness that was never their fault. And we are here to make sure they rise.
